Customer Reviews

I'm impressed!

Review Date: November 24, 2009
Reviewer: S. Harrison, Clements, CA United States
The Garmin nuvi 285WT is a winner.

The case for the Garmin 285WT is sleek shiny black plastic. The case seems very sturdy - in fact all the pieces appear to be made of quality plastic. It comes with the power adapter for the car, and a USB cable to hook up to your computer. (Some of the less expensive Garmins do not come with the USB cable, which is a problem because you need a USB cable to register the unit.)

Pros:
The unit was extremely easy to set up. Upon first use, it guides you through set-up, which is simple. The icons on the screen are simple and intuitive. I started using it without even reading the directions.

After the initial settings are entered, it sets about finding the local satellites. I told it to skip that step, since I was just hooking it up to a wall charger (sold separately) to charge the batteries. Not only did it go ahead and find the satellites, it found them while sitting on my kitchen table. I don't know how it did that, but it did. There are green bars in the corner of the display showing you how many satellites have been acquired. There it was, displaying all four green bars after just a few minutes. That was impressive.

In the car, it locks onto the satellites extremely fast. It is much faster to find the signals than my friend's TomTom 910. To be fair, the TomTom is an older unit, but it was a much more expensive unit than the Garmin 285WT to begin with.

I am using the default voice. It is extremely clear and easy to understand. It has only messed up on one street name, as it assumed that N Street was the same as North Street. I am not in an area where there are street names in Spanish or other languages, so I have not had the chance to find out how well it deals with those. The voice is much more understandable than the voice in the TomTom 910 (I hope my friend doesn't read this...). (The TomTom also consistently mangled Spanish street names when we took a road trip to San Jose.)

If one drives past a turn that it has selected, the device instantly says "Recalculating," and immediately updates the directions. I missed a turn at night in a very dark area, (I would have had a hard time finding the alternative route) and it didn't miss a beat.

The display is extremely legible both in bright sunlight and at night. I had to turn the brightness down to the minimum because it was a bit too bright at night for my taste.

The plastic suction cup holds extremely well. Be sure to take the transparent protective film off of it before using. I have it mounted on a Gilsson UBM Portable Car Non-Skid Friction Beanbag Dashboard Mount for Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and more that has worked out quite well.

The 285WT comes with a feature that I really like called "Where Am I?" It's an emergency location feature - you can tap the screen to get your latitude and longitude. So if you get a flat tire out in the middle of the Mohave Desert, the tow truck from Trona will be able to find you. Assuming, of course, that tow trucks from Trona also have GPS devices.

Cons:
It gave me bad directions one time. It was a good thing I knew the area. Since I just got this unit, I don't know how often this sort of thing will happen. I am willing to forgive in this instance, because it seems to perform so well overall. (I don't know how forgiving I'd be if I had driven miles out of my way...)

Neutral:
This model is Bluetooth. I don't have a Bluetooth phone (I know, I know, I am using archaic technology...) so I couldn't test that feature.

The device also comes the MSN Direct (9 months free) which I found to be of very limited usefulness because I live in a rural area. I mean, c'mon, around here the 4H Club pancake breakfast at the volunteer fire department is a Big Deal, and MSN Direct is hardly going to tell me about things like that. I also don't have traffic concerns of the type that one would have in Los Angeles or San Francisco, for example. I also don't know why one needs a Doppler weather display on one's GPS, unless one is driving through Oklahoma in a thunderstorm during tornado season. It might be great for that, who knows?

If you live in an urban area, don't get too excited about MSN Direct, because Microsoft has already announced that they are killing it in 2012. It was originally developed for a device called a Smart Watch, which obviously hit the market with a big belly flop, or we'd all have one. More information can be found on MSN Direct and the planned demise thereof in an October 28, 2009 article at the PC World website.

All in all, I am extremely happy with this device, and recommend it without reservation. In fact, I am buying one for my son for Christmas.

A Basic Easy-to-Use GPS Which Offers Excellent Value for Money

Review Date: December 6, 2009
Reviewer: Lawrence H. Bulk, New Jersey USA
I recently (November 28, 2009) received this excellent Garmin nüvi 285W/285WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic courtesy of Amazon Vine and, after using it as much as possible to familiarize myself with it, I can report that, overall, I am very pleased with this unit.

This is my second Garmin GPS; the first one was the GARMIN 010-00656-00 Nuvi 250W Widescreen Travel Assistant which I have been using since December 2007. Should anyone reading this review be interested, I refer that person to my review of the older unit.

This particular one, recently introduced, is really an incremental update of the 250W in that it too is a "basic" unit, though it does have more features - many of which may be useful to most people but also a few which hold no particular interest, at least to me. Naturally, having additional features makes operation more complex but, fortunately, some of these can be ignored and/or disabled should the owner so desire.

I must mention that I definitely prefer simpler units to more complicated ones, especially when I am driving at 65MPH on a crowded highway! I do not think that GPS units (or ANYTHING meant for use in a moving car) should have all sorts of unneeded "bells and whistles" which can make operation difficult, if not downright dangerous. I think a cell phone should be a cell phone, a camera should be a camera, a radio should be a radio -- and a GPS should be a GPS. Period. Obviously many, many people will disagree with my preferences but, if you are one of the few who do agree with me (and even if you don't), then I hope that this review will be of use to you. At least you know my perspective.

I have noticed that, when adding new features to newer models, Garmin attempts to keep the interface similar to past ones. Unfortunately, though well intentioned, this sometimes makes the interfaces somewhat awkward in use as anyone who uses this new instrument will quickly discover. I mention below the necessity of deleting data in several separate locations (screens); this is one disadvantage of trying to keep the older interfaces.

Now for my review: I shall first discuss some of the new features that the 285WT has that the 250W did not which I do not like and/or do not use.

For example, there is a new feature called ecoRoute. If you activate the "Vehicle Profile" within this feature, the unit will calculate your fuel costs and approximate gas mileage. Frankly, this is of little, if any, use, in my opinion, as the data will only be a general approximation. But when you wish to delete this data for each trip as well as general trip data, you must do so separately within each screen in which the data is stored (as many as three separate screens). To delete such data in the 250W, you need delete the data - maximum speed and mileage data - from the same screen and this is relatively simple. Not so with the 285WT. Of course you need not activate a "Vehicle Profile" and I recommend that, in the interest of simplicity, that you ignore this feature. After all, of what real use is it?

This unit also features Bluetooth. If you are one of the many people who enjoy this feature for use with your cell phone, this will be of value to you. But, as I do not use a Bluetooth cell phone, I have disabled it.

I also have no interest at all in the Microsoft Network; I see no need to have stock market reports on my GPS. Nor do I need their traffic reports, for which you must pay $50.00 per year after the trial period (I cannot accurately determine how long the trial period is: the instruction manual states "3 months" but Amazon, and at least one other review, states "9 months.") But, whatever the trial period is, I have no interest in activating MSN Direct and I'm sure you have read in other reviews that it is to be discontinued in 2012. And it is certainly easy enough to get such information as it offers from a local radio news station.

In order to use the MSN Direct, you must use the power cable which Garmin supplies with the unit. This contains the MSN receiver. If you use an older power cable, such as this one Garmin nüvi Vehicle Power Cable the GPS itself will function normally but there will be no MSN. That's fine with me - I have three of these older cables. I keep one in each of our two cars and one in the house. (I keep the actual GPS units in the house too when they are not in use.) I will not be using the supplied power cable with MSN receiver with my 285WT. (I recommend that everyone buy at least one spare cable, of whatever type, "just in case.")

The case on my older 250W is a flat gray color. The new 285WT has a glossy black finished case. While the glossy black is somewhat more attractive (but really - who cares?), it shows all of your fingerprints. The flat gray case does not do this. Thus I much prefer the older case.

You'll certainly want to have a case for your Garmin; I recommend this one: AmazonBasics Carrying Case for Portable GPS Units (Black). You'll also want a Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]; this is a FAR better mount than the supplied windshield-mounted suction-cup mount and, in any case, in certain states the suction cup mount is banned by law.

I had hoped that Garmin would have improved the "Detour" function but they have not. When driving and desiring a detour, you must touch the Menu option at the bottom of the screen and then click on the Detour function in the next screen. This is the same as on the 250W. I wish that Garmin would place the Detour function button on the main screen. That's where it belongs, in my opinion.

Okay, those are the "bad" parts. If you're still with me, I shall now discuss the "good" parts, the improvements (and they are many and considerable) over the 250W.

First and foremost - this new unit locks onto the satellites FAR faster than does the older one. This is VERY noticeable and very welcome. Three days ago, we visited some friends who live about 35 miles away; traveling to their house is my Garmin "test-bed" to see how well it functions (the trip is convoluted). Both units take us there flawlessly but, when restarting the 250W when we wish to "Go Home," for some reason the 250W will not pick up the satellites until we have driven almost one mile from their house. This is strange (because it "knew" where we were when I turned it off) and annoying. (Of course we know how to get home; we do not really need the Garmin - but this is a "test.") This happens consistently, each and every time we visit these friends.

Not so with the 285WT - as soon as I turned it on at their house, it instantly locked onto the satellites. We were very pleased with this performance.

I have also noticed that the 285WT consistently locks onto satellites in my house, even with all the blinds drawn. Obviously there is no "line-of-sight" here so this performance improvement is quite amazing and is much improved over the 250W which rarely, if ever, locks onto the satellites in my house (and is much slower in locking to them even outdoors, although this is not a major disadvantage in MOST cases).

So far, no matter where we have gone, or for how long the unit was turned off, or where we were when we turned it back on (we were not always at the same location as we were when we turned it off), it almost instantly locked on to the satellites. Frankly, this is remarkable.

I should also mention that the boot-up time on the 285WT is much quicker than on the 250W.

The next improvement I note is the virtual keyboard. You have your choice of a QWERTY keyboard or the one ABCDE featured on the older Garmins. The QWERTY is a vast improvement. It also features numbers as well as letters thereby making it unnecessary to go to another screen to enter numbers. In addition, to get to the symbols (@#$%^), you need only go to one other screen (as opposed to two on the 250W); this is indicated at the bottom of the Garmin's keyboard screen.

In addition to the backspace control found on the 250W (which deletes each letter/number as you backspace), there are cursor controls as well on the 285WT which allow you to move the cursor to whichever point you desire and then use the backspace control to delete only the one undesired letter and replace it with the correct one - just like on a computer.

All in all, this is a major and welcome improvement and makes typing in addresses, etc., much more convenient.

The screen information has been somewhat improved on the 285T and is slightly easier to read and comprehend quickly. But, while the new unit shows the next turn (and there is a pictogram showing the turn), the green "line" at the top no longer shows the road on which you are traveling as it does on the 250W. It shows the next turn you must make - even when that turn is many miles away. This is a step backwards, in my opinion. You can see the road you're on if you wish - but you must touch the magenta line (which shows the correct route to your destination). I feel that the green line should show the actual road on which you are driving until about four or five miles from your next turn (you would be able to preview the next turn, if you wished, by merely touching the green line which will then show you all the steps subsequent to get to your destination); the pictogram could constantly show the next turn (as it does now).

The 285WT shows the speed limit on the road you are using if such data is available to Garmin. Unfortunately, it is not always accurate - so you better read the road signs and not depend solely on this feature. (There is a local road which, for years, has had a section of about a half-mile in which the limit is 35MPH. When I first got the 285WT and drove on this section, it showed the limit to be 40MPH. When I registered my unit over the internet, I was "forced" to update the firmware and I took advantage of their free one-time map upgrade. After doing so, I noticed that now the speed limit listed on that section was 45MPH, the same as the rest of the road! This is not good! The upgrade made the error worse! I have seen many people pulled over on that section of the road, the number depending, I suppose, upon just how strapped for cash the township is. In any event, I do not think anyone should rely on the speed limit shown on your Garmin even though most of the time it DOES seem to be accurate.)

There is a particularly welcome new feature on the 285WT within the Tools section; you click on the Tools icon at the bottom of the screen (which, for reasons best known to Garmin, is now to the right of the Volume setting instead of to the left of it, as previously). You click on that Tools icon and, directly in the center of the following screen, is a "Where Am I?" icon. Click on that and you will see the actual coordinates of your location (including elevation), the nearest address, and the nearest intersection. In addition, and most important, there are buttons for the nearest Hospitals, Police Stations, and Fuel.

If, while driving, you touch the Vehicle icon on your screen, the same location information is shown. (It's best to have your "co-pilot" do this however as it is with most of the options the Garmin has.)

All in all, this is very easy to use and very welcome even if the nearest address shown is not always "spot-on" accurate (it's close though).

There is also, within the Tools screen, a My Data section which features a particularly easy means of setting or changing your Home location. This is quite useful when traveling, for instance, or, when using the Pedestrian setting, for changing your Home to the location of your car in a crowded shopping center. Do that and you'll never have trouble finding your car again! (You can do that with the 250W as well but it is quicker and easier with the 285WT.)

I have the screen brightness set to 50% (you'll find the settings within the Display option under Color Mode), both for Daytime and for Nighttime. Of course, after the adjustments, I set the Garmin's Color Mode back to Auto; this changes the screen as the sun goes down. My wife and I have found that 50% in both options works for us; your preferences may differ.

I noticed that I had to set the Volume to 90% on my 285WT to achieve a comfortable sound level which is easy for us to hear; the corresponding setting on my 250W is 70%. However I am sure that this is a sample to sample variance and you will have to experiment to find your own desired volume level.

You have read about Text-to-Speech in which the GPS says the street names rather than just "turn right" or "turn left" as on the 250W.

Well, at least on this unit. this feature is a bit of a mixed bag. First, not all of the available "voice" choices feature text-to-speech (TTS). Only some of them do - and the voices which do so may not please you. For example, American English does not feature TTS; American English-Samantha (TTS) does and this is what we're now using. On our 250W, we use British English, which we prefer. British English is also an option on the 285WT but "she" doesn't feature TTS. For that, if you want a female British voice, you must use British English-Serena (TTS) - and "she's" awful, in both my and my wife's opinion. She speaks too fast and none too clearly, in our opinion, especially in her pronunciation of road names, and she sounds more "Irish" than "British" (not that that matters much). But, for us, "she" is unpleasant sounding and, therefore, essentially unusable. The male voices, in our limited - thus far - experiences, are more difficult for us to understand in a moving vehicle so, for the moment, we are staying with our American English-Samantha (TTS) "companion." (We haven't tried any of the other languages offered as we speak only English.)

A slight disadvantage to TTS is that, if the road name is a long one, you could conceivably pass the turn before "she" could get it all out! (I think that this would be a rare occurrence however.) I still rely on reading the street names on the top green line.

Personally, I think it would be better for Garmin to offer various voices and languages and offer the option, for ALL of them, to have TTS on or off, as the user chooses. Perhaps some day they will be able to implement that.

Of course all the features in the world are of absolutely no use if the GPS doesn't take you where you want to go! In this respect, I believe that this Garmin nüvi 285WT is as good as any on the road, regardless of price. Is it perfect? Certainly not! As I stated in my review of the 250W, sometimes you still have to ask! But it is as accurate a unit as you're going to find. Thus far, in our limited usage, we have not noticed any differences in the routes chosen by our 285WT from those chosen by our 250W. But I have a Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates for our 250W and I do keep it updated so it has the same maps as the 285WT. (I recommend this "lifetime" option for most people though, as I have it for my 250W, I shall not be buying it for my 285WT, at least at this time.)

I think I have covered most of the incremental changes that Garmin has made from its 2007 model, the 250W, to its 2009 model, the 285WT. I should think, though I do not know, that the same changes will have been made to other new models within the 200 series. I think that, for the most part, the operational changes are improvements.

I should like to sum up this review by repeating that I am very pleased with the new 285WT and its performance. I have mentioned a number of things I do not like - but do not let that dissuade anyone from buying this GPS. The advantages GREATLY outweigh any disadvantages and the changes from the 250W to the 285WT are, for the most part, significant and good. And after all, NO product is "perfect" - and no product ever will be!

And though it doesn't "run rings" around the 2-year-old 250W (except in its much improved satellite reception), for the most part, it has been greatly improved over its predecessor, especially in its general ease of use (when certain "features" are disabled), and these improvements will be especially noticeable to anyone with Garmin experience. Within its class, this GPS represents excellent value for money. (It's a constant source of amazement to me that Garmin can offer such an excellent product at such a low price. And, by the way, if you are as interested in GPS pricing as I am, you will find that the ABSOLUTE best place to buy one of these things is right here - from Amazon!)

I want to thank everyone who has read my review and I hope that it has been of some help.

I highly recommend this Garmin nüvi 285WT to anyone interested in a "basic" Global Positioning System device.
Great GPS

Reviewer: J. Jones,
I saw the low star ratings because of the MSN Direct shutdown in 2012. I don't see down rating several stars on a GPS because of such a accessory service which you can get other ways if you really need it. I see this as a great GPS and that is all it needs to be.
Garmin 780 vs 285WT

Review Date: December 3, 2009
Reviewer: Bob Feeser, Springfield, PA USA
I have the Garmin nüvi 780 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Serviceand was glad to acquire the 285WT as well. I could talk about the side by side comparison of features between the two, but the chart on this page identifies them for you already. What I want to share with you is something that I consider to be very important, and I don't notice many covering it, and that is the sound experience. When I am driving down the highway, first and foremost on my wish list is to be enjoying the radio or CD. Having automated directions is just as important, but not at the cost of not being able to listen to music. The 780 which sells currently for around the same amount of money as the 285WT is a full featured premium version including the MP3 playback feature, whereas the 285WT does not. Both units accept the SDHC cards with the latest update, but only the 780 has music playback. The beauty of that is when you are listening to your tunes, and the voice with the directions comes on, it momentarily silences the music, and speaks the directions, and then resumes the music again; that is sweet. What is even better is that it has the audio out jack that connects to the face mount auxiliary input jack on the front of the cars stereo so I can hear the tunes, and the directions right through the cars stereo system. With steering wheel mounted audio controls I have a lot of control with the volume, but miss the ability to skip over songs, or be able to select a playlist the way an iPod does. Nevertheless it is a great way to experience the Garmin. Both units have a built in speaker, and you can play your tunes through that on the 780 the same way, or just listen to directions on the 285WT. The problem with the 285 speaking directions at normal or mildly loud music levels with the radio on is that they are both going on at the same time. It gives you a frustrated feeling that there is too much voice traffic at once, and leaves me a little annoyed. It's like hearing 2 people talking at the same time. You can decipher both communications, but it requires more attention than you would feel comfortable with during a repeated performance. In plain words it wears on you. So the 780 eliminates that, and makes for a more enjoyable experience, since it controls the music and directions from the same source, so it has complete control. My advice is to get an 8, 16, or 32 Gig SDHC card which is the size of a postage stamp, and holds your entire MP3 collection. I also suggest that you get the SDHC that comes with the USB stick so you can

Had to contact Garmin Tech Support to Calibrate 1350T

Review Date: November 24, 2009
Reviewer: Charles E. Sherwood, Tampa, FL
Let me be perfectly clear...I really like my new Garmin 1350T GPS.

The only difficulty I had after taking it out of the box and charging it for the first time was a problem in having the GPS "easily "recognize" exactly what available screen (option/letter/number, etc.) that I was "pointing" to on the touchscreen. I thought I had a defective unit so I contacted Garmin's free Tech Support. The technician took me through an easy, yet undocumented (to me at least) calibration procedure that only took a minute or so. Since then the unit has performed as advertised.

Also...You NEED to have a cable with a standard USB connection on one end & a Mini-USB connection on the other end. Garmin DOES NOT automatically include this cable in the box along with the 1350T. Without this cable, you can't connect this GPS to your computer in order to register it online or receive your free updated (if available) mapping or operational software.

Be advised also that not ALL USB/Mini-USB cables are alike. These cables may all LOOK the same but there really are TWO different types. One will only let electric current through in order to charge your internal GPS battery, while the other will not only charge the battery, BUT WILL ALSO carry data back and forth between your computer and the 1350T. Be sure to obtain the kind of cable that can perform BOTH functions.
Worth every dollar

This product was well worth the release date that I waited for. The traffic delay feature helps me avoid road delays. It works great. Just be careful when you up date the maps on line from Garmins web site. I thought the up date would help, you'd think! Instead it messed the unit up. So bad that after two days of hours on the phone with their tech dept. That I sent the unit back to Garmin. They are going to replace it with a brand new one. The people at Garmin are really nice and very helpful. Its just waiting on the phone so long for your turn.
This one keeps up with you in the city!

The 1350T is the second Garmin GPS unit I've used, and it's far superior. It keeps up with me in the city and very quickly recalculates the route if I make a wrong turn. The lane assist feature is also very useful and gives me quick, visual confirmation when I approach multi-lane intersections. I bought the 1350T for this lane assist feature, and I'm glad I did.

I did a lot of evaluating before I chose this GPS device. I determined what was important to me after actually using another Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom GPS. The 1350T is everything that it is advertised. Yes, there is advertising but is very insignificant when not moving in the Traffic mode. The Advanced Lane function and Text to Speech functions worked great. I used it in Honolulu last week and was curious how the text to speech would work with the Hawaiian pronounciations. It did pretty good. Another nice feature that I have used is the Pedestrian mode function. It works great! The battery charge is what is advertised, about 4 hours. So, if you need help with directions while walking in the city, this does a good job. Good GPS!!
Didn't think I needed this

I received this as a gift. I thought I'd use it every once in a while, so I kept it. Boy was I wrong!! I use it all of the time! Even if I know how to get someplace, I have used it to find stores, gas stations or restaurants nearby. I love the lane assist feature, as it lets me know in advance if I need to be ready to make a left turn or a right turn. The traffic update has been great too. I sometimes use the Nuvi just to determine length of time it will take to travel between two points - or how much longer till I get home.

Only con was that it had trouble picking up satelite reception while driving among the tall buildings of Manhattan.

Outstanding Unit!!

Review Date: November 8, 2008
Reviewer: J. Johnson, Columbia, SC
This is my 4th Garmin GPS and I love it! The other writer mentioned the extra "tumor" for about 3 inches. If that bothers you, well I am NOT that anal and it is hardly even obvious. Who cares about the power cable any way? The unit's screen is clear, bright, easy to read. Lot's of improvements. Considered the 265WT but frankly just prefer the smaller screen for walking or riding a bike, just fits in pockets better and still large enough to see easily in an automobile. I agree that the start-up is FAST-FAST. A great improvement over several previous Garmin models. I highly recommend this one!
**I have now used this for a few weeks. The screen is actually brighter and the colors much more vivid than previous models I have owned. Up-to-date locations and the voice is an improvement over prior models as well, much easier to understand street names and names of saved peoplelocations. For the money-you can't go wrong. When I go to Europe again in the future I am getting the 275 model which is the same as this but has maps for Europe as well. Again, I do prefer the 3.5" vs. the 4.3" screen size. It's very easy to see in the car and so compact for walking, hiking etc. Garmin keeps making improvements and this little unit is a GREAT value, highly-highly recommend it.
***OK, I have used this for months now and it has NEVER gotten me lost, never. Previous models at least got me lost once. I am more than pleased I made the investment in this little puppy. Fast, easy to see (even in bright conditions, better than prior Garmins I had). It's worth the extra bucks to get this vs. others, well worth it and I could not be more pleased now.
Best bang for your buck Garmin - 265T

Review Date: May 2, 2009
Reviewer: Rocketwidget,
I had a Garmin c320 for a few years that I was mostly happy with, but I was ready to upgrade after hearing about some of the new features. Here are the highlights that, in my opinion, make this GPS the best bang for your buck.

* Like all Garmins, the interface is designed for ease of use. My grandparents use a Garmin. However, if you are looking for customization, you might want to consider a TomTom.
* The routing engine is very good. Caveat: Be wary that the points of interest (POI) addresses may be inaccurate. If you have a specific address, enter it!
* The 265T is much quicker at getting a satellite lock when turning on than my c320. Starting from power on, usually about 10-15 seconds vs. 1-2 minutes before.
* The traffic service is free (ad-supported). Other makes and models require a subscription, which I'm not a big fan of. The ads are unobtrusive and appear only on startup and on arriving at your destination.
* Text to speech
* The new interface is much more helpful, specifically, the upcoming turn direction indicator.

The higher end Garmin features, such as lane assist, 3-D building view, mp3 player, etc. seem superfluous to me. Voice recognition would be cool, but the 855 and 885T models are very expensive. If you want a widescreen model, the 265WT is exactly the same except for a bigger screen. Still, I don't have any problem reading the 265T's screen and its approx. $50 cheaper.

P.S. I would highly recommend getting the Garmin Friction Mount as well. This will prevent suction cup rings on your windshield, to reduce your profile for theft.
an excellent GPS navigator

Review Date: June 24, 2009
Reviewer: Matthew G. Sherwin, last seen screaming at Amazon customer service
This portable GPS navigator by Garmin really comes in handy when you're trying to find your way around in unfamiliar territory. It used to be, of course, that you had to read a map--or try to find someone who would take the time to give you street directions. I remember so many times as a kid the frustration my parents felt when they had taken us on a long road trip to visit relatives and by accident they got lost after making a wrong turn onto the wrong highway. No more of this aggravation! Once it's juiced up and attached to your windshield you'll be ready to go!

There are many bells and whistles that come with this device, but first and foremost this is a fine device that tells you which roads to take to get from point A to point B. You get your choice of a man's voice or a woman's voice and there's a volume control, too. Other options actually include a British version of English and that's great. (It's not hard; for example, the British version will say "straight on" when they mean just go straight through an intersection). It's also remarkably easy to find directions once you merely type in the street address of your destination. You can zoom in on a map and zoom out with ease, too. If you have any concerns; don't worry--reading the manual for actually using this in your car is scarcely even necessary. Much like classic Windows software (excepting maybe the first few times you use Office 2007) it's all very intuitive and you won't be wasting time figuring out how to work this. I learned many of its main features simply fiddling with it rather briefly.

One thing that is absolutely wonderful is that you can easily save several addresses so that you can just scroll through the menu until you find the desired destination--and then just press one button to get the GPS up to par almost instantly, telling you which roads to take! It's an incredible little device that really does so much considering how small it is.

The extra special bells and whistles include notices about traffic jams up ahead. There are shaded terrain abilities; movie schedules and even weather reports included amongst the extras!

Overall, this GPS navigator by Garmin is excellent. In addition to all the plusses I mentioned above, the colors on the display are crisp and the display is extremely easy to read. It's all very intuitive. I highly recommend this product!
Great product!

This GPS is much more than just a GPS, I also use it as a bluetooth handsfree carkit for my BlackBerry and now my iPhone.
It's a smaller GPS than my earlier Garmen's with the most features.
This model comes with lifetime traffic and the only "price" is the small ads.
I also find the speed limit and my actual speed useful as this helps me to drive in the speed limit all the time.
Great features for the price

Review Date: August 10, 2009
Reviewer: Wyxgsjm, California
I have only used my first GPS for 3 days, but I already enjoy the great features
(1) Free traffic - It works surprisingly well for me in east SF bay area, it accurately and promptly reports conditions of 680 and 880. Even though I use 680 and 880 every day for commuting, I am often hit by traffics on 680 and 880, but today, 265T guided me correctly. This saves me time and money - I think those global warming guys should provide rebate for FM equipped GPS!
(2) Bluetooth - Works well with my Samsung Beat. It supports address book as well. The only problem is that the Beat always ask for accepting GPS or not even though security is off. I am still trying to find a way so that Beat accepts GPS without asking for confirmation(It always works if the phone tries to connect GPS, no question asked)
(3) GPS - Response time is very good. Speaker is loud enough for me.
The only problem I had with this unit is that there is a pixel always stays as dark blue at lower left corner. But Amazon staffs have been really helpful on resolving this issue. All in all, I am very happy with this unit and Amazon service.

Update: Overall still very good GPS. But now I have two minor issues:
(1)Like other reviewers mentioned, local travel time is off because it does not take traffic light delays into account. In the case of slight traffic on highway, it often results in wrong judgment(insisting to use local roads)
(2) GPS lock time had been very good, but somehow it became slower and slower. I had to perform firmware reinstall and it locks very quick again(within 10 seconds)

Update 2:
I did not see other reviewer mentioned often, but this device supports custom POI - The most useful one for me is Red light and Speed camera - It gives a warning when your car approaches these cameras!(You can select how far to alert) I found Trapster POI file very accurate and it is free! The CSV files can be easily modified. I would purchase GPS sooner if I knew today's GPS can support so many fancy features - Some are money saving features(It is particular useful for east bay area traveler, lots of cameras!)

Update 3: 12/10/2009
Up to 2 block inaccuracy around San Francisco Moscone center. I went to this area serveral times for meetings, this GPS never lost signals in this tough area, but it may show me on neighbour street. I suspect other GPS will have same problem because this is signal quality issue due to surrounded by tall buildings. I simply follow two rules in this situation:
A. Follow voice prompt for next turn - when it says keep left/right after turn, do keep left/right after the turn
B. The default 3D normal view shows about 3 blocks, if 2nd turn is 2 block within next turn, it will show up in the map. So after next turn, if GPS put you on wrong street or does not update map, do not panic, drive calmly, the GPS will catch up within 2 blocks. So you either know where is 2nd turn or GPS will tell you in time.
Following these two simple rules, I have not missed any turn yet.

Another suggestion is to use simple prompt for warnings. I used "Attention, Red light camera ahead" before, my colleague said it was cool the first time, but it soon became very annoying around Moscone center because there are so many camera.

Product Description

The 255W features predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet"). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.

The nüvi 2x5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Improved Interface

One of Garmin's key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

HotFix™ – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix
Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a "lock" on three satellites, it can't effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get "satellite lock" is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin's new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content

FM Traffic
TMC traffic service coverage map
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

Garmin Nuvi 255w

Review Date: July 1, 2008
Reviewer: Schultzie, Northeast PA
I actually could not decide between the Garmin Nuvi 255w or the 750 model, so I decided to buy them both for comparison. I mounted them both to my car windshield and gave them various addresses to find together. I found that both models took the same routes and announced upcoming turns and street names at practically the same time. One thing I noticed about the 255w was that it was updating my position on the road more often, I'd say about 3 times as often as the 750. This made for smoother graphics on the 255w of the vehicle moving along displayed roads, where the 750's display was more of a "jerky" movement. I also found that the display on the 255w was a bit brighter, clearer, and more vivid than on the 750 in both daylight and at night. Another feature I like on the 255w is the graphic turn indicator in the upper left corner, which the 750 lacks. This is a small arrow which shows upcoming turns and the distance to that turn. It also show things like a fork in the road, (ie: a Y intersection), and which fork you will be taking. The 750 just displays text on the top line for upcoming turns without the arrow. It's just a little extra feature on the 255w which I happened to really like. The 255 also automatically adjusts the font size of displayed text so that even lengthy text will fit.
Another feature on the 255w is a display of the posted speed limit on the road which you are currently on right above your current displayed speed. I found myself not even looking at my car speedometer as I could easily see my current speed and the speed limit of my route at a glance. The 750 doesn't have this feature. I also like how they moved the zoom in (+) and zoom out (-) buttons on the 255w to the same side of the screen which makes it a bit easier. On the 750 the zoom buttons are on opposite sides of the screen.
Now there are some features on the 750 that the 255w does not have. The 750 can broadcast it's sound over your FM radio with the supplied cigarette lighter cable, and it has a headphone jack, which I found to be nice features. The 750 also has an MP3 player and an Audio-book player, which the 255w does not. Another really nice feature of the 750 is the car locater. This is a great feature if you are parking in a really big lot, such as at an amusement park or a fair. The 750 marks your location when you remove it from the car, then you take it with you and it remembers where you parked and takes you right back to your car. The 255w doesn't have the car locater.
I also thought the the voice prompts of the 750 where more pleasant sounding than the 255w's. The 750 sounds more like a real female voice, where the 255w sounds more robotic.
Another thing to consider was that I paid $50 less for the 750 and it came with the FM transmitter cable and a USB cord to connect it to your computer for updates and downloads.
My final decision was to keep the 255w and return the 750 because I really liked the graphic turn indicator and the posted speed limit and current speed indicators. I didn't find a need for the 750's MP3 player and Audio book player, but that is up to personal preference. Since the USB cable was not included with the 255w, I purchased it on this site for $10. I also intend to purchase the MSN direct cable when it is available in August 2008.
Best In Its Class - Great For Traveling

Review Date: August 7, 2008
Reviewer: EmbeddedFlyer, Seattle, WA United States
If you spend much time driving in unfamiliar territory, especially if you rent cars in big cities, a good portable GPS makes an amazing difference. And the Garmin 255W is the best one I could find in the $250 - $350 range.

First this thing just plain works. I haven't had any issues with mine. It was easy to set up and figure out right out of the box, and it's easy to use. It never has had trouble getting sufficient signal unlike earlier and cheaper models.

I chose the 255W for several reasons: It uses some of the newest and best maps available. It has one of the more usable touch screens for entering destinations. It's fast to acquire satellites. And Garmin almost always comes out on top in reviews--especially in routing.

Ultimately, you buy a car GPS to get you from Point A to Point B as easily and efficiently as possible. And that's what the 255W does best. If you've ever had a "Brand X" GPS take you on some strange route that adds 20 minutes to your trip, has you turn the wrong way down a one way road, tell you to turn AFTER you've passed the street, frequently loses the satellite signal, or has old maps missing streets, you know how important this stuff is.

The 255W has a really clear display that's easy to see in any light. It's small enough to use on foot. The windshield mount works great and it's easy to toss in the glovebox when you park. It even tells you the speed limit on most roads. The "points of interest" feature works very well to find places to eat by type of cuisine, gas stations, etc.

The difference between the 255W and 205W is the 255 speaks street names and includes Alaska and Canada. The 205 and 205W will tell you to "turn right in 500 feet" which isn't as helpful or obvious as "turn right on Ivy Street in 500 feet". The "W" models are widescreen which makes entering destinations easier due to having a bigger "keyboard" and also lets you see more map area while driving.

All in all this isn't the cheapest GPS in its class but it's one of the best. My only gripe is you need an expensive add-on to get live traffic data--something that's included with the Magellan Roadmate 1430 which is close to the same price. But the Garmin 255W is a better GPS in every other way.
LOVE the Garmin Nuvi 255W

Review Date: June 29, 2008
Reviewer: L. Smith, CT
I received this GPS system about a week ago, and I haven't found one thing to complain about yet. The features are great, and all entirely user friendly. No need to read the manual, just plug it in and go! The Garmin Nuvi 255W connects to satellites extremely fast--So when I get in my car and turn it on, we're pretty much ready to go immediately. The new display posts speed limit signs of major roads flush left on the screen, which is a new feature that is also really helpful, if you're driving in an unfamiliar area. The widescreen display makes it possible to view the names of roads that you are passing on the screen--which makes it much easier to differentiate between which road to turn on when there are two streets on your right (not clearly labeled) that are only one house apart...which has happened to me twice... Also, the fact that the Garmin Nuvi 255W speaks street names is also helpful in times like these. In addition, another feature I find to be immensely helpful is how fast the Nuvi 255W recalculates your position if you do miss a turn. I love the detour feature, it saved me a ton of time when I heard there was an accident on the highway and took back roads that I would have never known existed! I would recommend the Garmin Nuvi 255W to anyone looking for a fast, reliable, and easy to use GPS system.
Great widescreen, street naming unit at a budget price

Review Date: May 16, 2009
Reviewer: Derek,
Was exactly what I was looking for. Widescreen unit that spoke the actual street name at a budget price. Was originally shopping on auction websites but Garmin's 1 year warranty doesn't support refurbished units sold on auction websites. Was also scared about it being a refurbished unit, but so far no issues. I've updated the software and downloaded the latest maps, all without issue. Doesn't come in a fancy retail box, but does include the mount and suction cup. Based on my experience, I would recommend the unit to a friend.
Great product- very happy

Reviewer: Chuck T. Moser, Bend, Oregon
I've never owned a GPS personally, but have had the occasional opportunity to use friends and family's GPS that comes with the cars, most notably the ones in Honda's CRV's... and have wanted one ever since.
After picking up the Nuvi 255w, I gotta say, this comes pretty darn close to the experience with the expensive factory-installed units... only smaller. In short, I can't think of much I don't like about it.
It picks up the satellites quickly (I've never noticed a lag), routes fast, has good animation (maybe 6-8 frames a second?), and is very, very accurate. The preloaded maps don't include some of the roads that have been built in our town in the last year (which is to be expected), but does include our street, which isn't even available on Google Maps yet. (Go figure) It's light, looks good and comes with everything you need EXCEPT the USB cable to hook it to the computer. If you don't have this, the only way to charge it is to use the cigarette lighter adapter that comes in the box. I just used the one that came with my digital camera, and it works fine. The screen is easily readable in the sun, and I love how it automatically dims to 20% at night.
One purpose this can be used for, which I never thought of before, is a portable yellow pages. Not only does it give you the address of the business, it also gives the phone number. Pretty cool. I didn't have the problems with the sounds of the voices like others have. They sound good to me... a little mechanical, but good.
The interface is a seller for me. Keep in mind that I don't really have much experience to compare it to, but it's obvious they've put some thought into it. The icons are a bit garish and cartoony, though... it's no iPhone.
The cons: The documentation sucks. Not that you really need it... the directions didn't tell me anything I didn't already know after fiddling with it for 10 minutes.
It doesn't ALWAYS speak the street names... most of the time, though.
Some of the voices are annoying. The British accent seems to talk in slow motion, but I think it's the easiest to understand.
I think they could work a little harder on the interface from a design standpoint. Nothing major, just a few

One of Garmin's core beliefs is to continually enhance the simplicity of the user experience. The nüvi on-screen menus are logically arranged, with clearly labeled, colorful icons, making it easy to enter data and get to the information you need quickly.

Navigate with Ease
nüvi 1390T comes ready to go right out of the box, with pre-loaded City Navigator North America NT street maps and millions of points of interest (POIs), such as hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs, and more, with map data provided by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping. Enter a destination on the touchscreen, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Text to speech enhances standard sat-nav voice guidance by speaking the names of places and roads. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. In addition, nüvi 1390T accepts custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras, and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Travel North America
With nearly 6 million points of interest and detailed road coverage for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, City Navigator North America NT delivers all the data you need to navigate North America.

  • Displays nearly 6 million points of interest--hotels, restaurants, parking, entertainment, fuel, shopping, and more.
  • Includes highways, interstates, business, and residential roads in metropolitan and rural areas.
  • Includes such detailed information as turn restrictions, roundabout guidance, speed categories, and other navigation features.
  • Gives turn-by-turn directions on your compatible Garmin device.
  • Includes postal code support for Canada.
  • Contains traffic data for compatible Garmin devices that use traffic receivers.
  • Enhances pronunciation data for compatible Garmin devices that speak street names (example: "Turn right on Main Street").

Lane assist guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. Click to enlarge.

Junction View gives you a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. Click to enlarge.

Know the Lane Before It's Too Late
No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Junction View takes it a step further, giving you a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road.

Pedestrian Navigation
With the Public Transit feature, you can navigate using buses, tramway, metro, and suburban rail systems with optional CityXplorer content. Downloadable CityXplorer data and city guides are available for purchase and download from garmin.com for many cities.

Where Am I?
Keep track of yourself and your car with nüvi 1390T. Just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address, and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. The nüvi 1390T even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots, such as amusement parks, stadiums, and malls.

HotFix Satellite Prediction
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to three days after the device was last turned off.

MSN Direct Compatible
Add the GDB 55 receiver for MSN Direct. With dynamic content from MSN Direct, you can avoid traffic backups when you travel with your compatible Garmin device. MSN Direct broadcasts traffic data to your GPS navigator so you can find the best route through traffic, check traffic flow, and receive accident warnings.

Great GPS! No complaints.

Just bought this GPS from Amazon and I'm having no problems with it at all. No sure why others have a problem with the speaker but it sounds fine to me. I bought this to replace my Nuvi 350 and it's a major upgrade. The menus are much nicer and I like the Speed Limit display. I did have a little trouble with the bluetooth. After pairing my iPhone the "Phone" icon disappeared from my GPS. It didn't seem to recognize my iPhone anymore. I went to the Garmin website, downloaded the 2.70 upgraded software for this unit (which has fixes for the speaker and bluetooth), did the pairing again, and now it works fine. I would definitely recommend this unit. Anyone who's having problems should download the latest software for this GPS from the Garmin website.
Absolutely love it!

I purchased this GPS recently. I had used an older Garmin for 2 weeks and I had liked it. I did not have time to do much research on this product but after reading a few reviews, I knew that Garmin is the manufacturer of choice for Aviation GPS(s). Once I knew that, I stpped researching and simply placed the order.

I had to drive from NY to FL a week after placing the order and Amazon replied with an order confirmation email stating that I will be receiveing the GPS device in about 1 month from the time I had placed the order. Panic moment, sepecially as I had specified and payed for 2-day express delivery of the product.

My travel plans were all in the air from the moment I received the Amazon order confirmation email. I quickly sent an email to Amazon Customer Service (at 2-3AM), to ensure they have the item in stock and that they'll ship ASAP. Amazon Customer Service reacted within minutes and was very very efficient in taking care of things. They even excusesed themselved for the automatic email I had received, which had the wrong date. I very much appreciate the Amazon Customer Service. In the past they have heped me just as promptly as they did with this order. Amazon is very much on top of everything!!! Efficient and fast and best! :)

I was able to use the GPS successfully from my very first attempt.
The first time I used it, I drove 1000 mi in 2 days. (It is totally fool proof! or as they call it in marketing "It's very user friendly.")
I also helped a lost trucker find his route with my GPS and I reached destination safely myself. Not one single wrong exit, Garmin GPS gives instructions well head, with sufficient time to react to the instruction at the speed you drive at. It indicates lane change, exits, well before you have to actually do it, thus giving you sufficient time to navigate the immediately surrounding traffic and follow the instructions in a very safe manner.

I have been using the GPS for 2 months now, daily and I absolutely love it. I have used the GPS with a NEON car, which is known for it's loud engine at high speeds. I drove the NEON at 80-90-110 mph and had the GPS volume at 80%. I could hear it loud and clear!

I have no idea what other reviewers are talking about, when they say that they cannot hear the GPS. If the person has a hearing problem and is driving a tractor, then it is possible that they could not hear the GPS voice feature, indeed. But I one could hear it very LOUD AND CLEAR. In the city I am using it at only 50% volume, with music on and it's still very loud.

I like the size. The screen is large enough, yet not too heavy to have in the purse. You can charge it once every 2 days without always needing to have the charging cable with you.

It has a feature that enables you to set AVOIDANCES: for example Highway if you want to drive off the highway at all times.

It includes a calculator, a currency convertor, world clock, etc.

It allows you to zoom in / out and re-center the map by screen-touch, just like you can grab the google maps and move it along the computer screen. You can use your finger and move the map across the screen of the GPS.

It has an ecoRoute feature, which comes with an "eco challenge" feature that measures how smoothly you accelerate / decelerate and it rates you. The smoother you drive, the less fuel you use, and the higher the score you get is. Pretty cool, huh?! :)

After you have saved a few addresses already, it will mark them on the map with relevant icons - a dollar bill for a bank, a tumb tag for an address, a pump for a gass station, etc.

I had it out in the rain for a few moments and the equipment is very well built, nothing happened to it.

There are a few other features, which I haven't got to use yet, but I'm sure it's all useful and practical. I have been driving a lot recently and this GPS was money very well spent. I hope this helps! Happy shopping. :)
Folks! This GPS unit is indeed very nice

I purchased this from BestBuy and I use it primarily on my motorcycle. It has Bluetooth and I have it paired with my helmet speakers. I used the suction mount to mount this onto the plastic display under the handle bar. I display is large enough and you can see it clearly even in direct sun light. I haven't used all of the features yet but from what I am seeing so far, no problems.

My only complaint is that the battery seems to die suddenly without any warning. Sometime the battery icon disappears and sometime it appears. However, as long as I fully charge the battery before starting my trip, the battery lasts for about 3 hours which is enough for most trips.

I like how the charging port is a standard USB port so you can any USB cable to charge this or in my case, I use my USB iGo tip that I use for my phone.
Works for me!

I had a little old Garmin before so this was easy to pick up and use. Powered up and worked fine. Just like my old one, sometimes it finds the satellite fast and sometimes takes longer. I did read you should not start until it finds it, and it can find it easier because you are not moving.

It was missing a McDOnald's that's been there a while. Maybe I used the wrong town. I agree that sometimes it's best to start your route the way YOU KNOW is the best way, and let it take it from there. I figure that if once in a while it takes you the longer way, that's ok because sooner or later you will get there. With NO Gps you might not!

I live in the South Jersey area, near Camden and Philadelphia. I am pleased to report that JUNCTION VIEW is operable here. I knew where I was going this weekend, but wanted to try it out. It's really cool to see an image of the overhead road signs on the gps. If I was unfamiliar with these junctions it would DEFINITELY have helped (they are a little confusing-ex: coming over Ben Franklin Bridge to Vine can be confusing-if you're from Philly you know what I mean!). That is the reason I chose this model over some others.

Haven't found the screen that gives me all my trip info on one screen (miles to, est time of arrival, avg speed, etc) on my old one I just hit one button. I may be missing the obvious here so I'll do some reading. There are some good websites walking you through the whole thing
[..]

Didn't try the lifetime traffic yet...no traffic at 8 am Sunday when I was on the highway! Didn't update map yet, will do that on day 58 or so to get the latest version. I don't think you need lifetime maps. They can't change THAT much and I'll want a new toy in 4 years or so. For now I'll use the roads it knows about and on long distance trips I bring a fairly current Atlas just in case. Sometimes it's nice to see the big picture and maybe toss in an impromptu side trip.

Didn't try bluetooth yet. I don't expect much from it, but it might be nice to have. Overall, good unit.

Well designed device

I had this GPS for 2 weeks so far:
This GPS is designed to be simple to use. It's fast to acquire its location and use is obvious enough to be very easy.

Pros:
- Voice is loud and clear. You can make your own voice set by downloading an application from Garmin. The application makes you say each voice component and creates a voice that you can upload to the 1390T.
- Better (than other GPSs I've seen) job at showing what's relevant on the map. On other units, it annoys to see half of a name of a street or not to see the names of the streets you are about to cross.
- Lane assist is great! It tells you on which lane you should be.
- Traffic info. This is free-ish. You may not pay for the feature with money but you will get adds that appear when the car is stopped. This adds are not very annoying, but I would prefer not to have them, yet somehow that service has to be paid for.

Cons or things I would change:
- When selecting a place to go, it should not be necessary to hit a GO button again. If the user already selected the place to go, why the need to confirm?
- The Favorite places should also be accessible in the menu without going through Categories. It would be simpler.

Best GPS I have ever Owned

Review Date: December 11, 2008
Reviewer: Michael Simpson, Leesburg VA
I have owned quite a few GPS units all including Phone, Laptop and Dedicated. Flat out before I even get started the Garmin Nuvi 265WT is the best I have ever owned. Let me just make a couple of comments on the most important features.

Touch Screen Interface
Very intuitive and easy to use. Touch screen is responsive but not instantaneous. What I particularly like is the ability to switch to a top down view by touching the screen. Once done you can use your finger to drag the map around at any zoom point. Once done you can hit the back button and resume your 3D view.

Turn by Turn
You have two options here. You can use one of the Text to Speech voices or one of natural voices. The text to speech voices will give you more information such as street names. This is what I use and even though you can tell it's a computer generated voice its quality is superb. The 265WT does a good job at keeping you updated. Also at any time you can hit the turn Icon and it will speak the distance to the next turn, giving you street name as well as direction. The audio is quite loud and in my noisy little Scion I have no problem hearing the messages.

Maps
I have found the map accuracy quite good. I live in Northern virginal and it seems to be very well updated as many of the very new streets included.

Automatic Routing
Very effective. You can choose between the quickest or the shortest with options to avoid U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Traffic, Ferries. The automatic rerouting is faster than my TeleNav phone and my Laptop computers.

Points of Interest
On my TeleNav phone GPS system I can enter any business in the national database and I can get directions, address and phone number. This is where the 265WT falls short. The TeleNav system has the advantage of searching online. Since the 265WT is limited to onboard memory there is a limit to the number of points of interest. A good example is I was looking for "Off Broadway Shoes" and the unit could not find them. However a search for "Payless Shoes" worked very well.

Traffic Alerts
The lifetime free traffic comes at a price. You will get popup adds. These are very small popups that supposedly only come when you are in the menu. This is not true. I have gotten them while in the navigation screen. For now they it seems to be once per trip but there is nothing to say they wont start getting more frequent. The other thing I don't like about the messages is that you have to hit them to continue and doing so takes you out of the nav screen to a kind of favorites screen. You have to hit the back button to get back to your navigations screen.
How well does the traffic system work. I live in Northern VA and have coverage throughout my area. The included radio fails to pick up a single signal without using an external antenna. Sadly you can just go down and purchase an FM antenna.. The Power cable has a 3/32" jack. What I did was to pick up a 3/32" plug from Radio Shack and soldered a 4' wire to the tip pin on the connector. Once draped out one of the windows I get very frequent traffic updates.
Once you start getting traffic reports I found them to be accurate and they do help. You can automatically avoid high traffic arias or do it manually as they accrue.
I am still debating if the popup adds are worth the effort.

Bluetooth Integration
This is my favorite feature. I can keep my keyboard locked Motorola Q in my pants pocket and use my 265WT to make and receive all my calls at a touch of a button. All my phone features are available on the 265WT. Phonebook, Call history, Voice Recognition. The voice quality is quite acceptable on both ends. As a matter of fact the echo I get on my Motorola is not there when using the 265WT as a hands free set.

Picture Viewer
I found this to be a very useless feature. If the photos are very big it takes forever for the 265WT to load them. This may be due to the slow access to the SD card slot.

There are other features like the ability to connect the 265WT to your PC and automatically add favorite locations using GoogleMaps. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and would purchase it again.

FYI the Nuvi 265WT is the same unit as the Nuvi 255W without the Bluetooth ability and the FM reliever cable (GTM 25). You can even purchase the GTM 25 from Garmin. If you don't want the Bluetooth feature and don't currently need the traffic feature you can pick up the Nuvi 255W cheaper.
Impressed!

Reviewer: Russell Madaus, Streamwood, IL
After doing extensive research I decided on this unit. Mainly because the 265wt is one of their newer NUVI products and it had the features I was looking for. If you look at the sites that have reviews on the 265wt, most are from nov/2008. I think this unit was released about 6 months ago. Anyway, here's my opinion on some of the key features of the 255WT.

1. Windsheild mount - works great. The suction cup is very high quality and I have no concerns that it will accidentally detach from the windsheild. I love the swivel capabilites and it allows you a perfect view no matter where you put it.

2. Satellite aquisition time - incredible! once you perform the initial aquistion, you are set. Now when I turn the on it's ready to go in usually under 3 seconds. Awesome!

3. Map directions and screen - wonderful. The GPS unit so far has given me perfect directions and the re-route capability works flawlessly. The screen is clear, bright and easy to navigate.

4. Free traffic alerts - works as described. I love this feature and I hardly saw any ads.

5. Bluetooth - giddy up! I had my Motorola KZR1 synched up in about 15 seconds. Easy to use and sure makes talking on the phone alot more enjoyable when driving. I've had conversations with multiple people and they could hear me fine. One cool thing is if your phone has voice dialing; because it allows you do it through the GPS unit. Also, all my contacts show up (even with multiple phone #'s).

6. And finally...the internal speaker. If you researched the 265WT like I've done you'll see ALOT of people complaining that the speaker is too quiet to hear anything. That was a big concern of mine but I felt I would give the unit a try and if it was that bad then I would return it. My thoughts on the speaker are this. The speaker size/quality could and probably should be improved. It's a cheapy speaker...BUT...I CAN hear the directions perfectly fine and can here the other person talking to me when using the bluetooth phone capability. Side notes: You HAVE to turn down your radio if you want to be able to hear it. Also, I was driving with the windows closed (it's friggin winter), so I cannot say how well you'd be able to hear the directions/phone with your windows rolled all the way down.

Bottom line - it has met or exceeded all of my expectations! I bought it on the day after Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) and I got an incredible deal! $199.99 with free shipping, no tax, and got %50 off a $25 case logic travel case. I would have spent an extra $150 if I would have bought the same unit from a local retailer.

Finally if your in the market to buy any GPS my suggestion is wait until it gets closer to X-mas and see if the price drops. I'm guessing they'll do it again. I was fortunate to get it when I did and hence saved a nice chunk of change.

Hope this helped!
Works perfectly

I was a bit confused at first by the 265w label on the device and on the screen during boot up; however, this unit does have the FM receiver built into the power adapter cable and works exactly as advertised. The routing software is much more intelligent than a previous model I've owned, the interface is notably improved and the text to speech for street names is a very nice addition. Hands-free phone features also work flawlessly.
Quite pleased. Also great Customer Service and Technical Assistance

My refurbished 265wt looks and works like new and the features were as I expected. The only thing that I wish it had is the ability to save routes. But you can plan and follow a route by designating a final destination and then again using the "Where To" Feature to add additional locations and then for each selecting the option "Add as Via Point," but you cannot save the route for future use.

I ran into two glitches when attempting to update the map (free within 60 days of first use). Since it was a refurbished unit, the first use date was more than 60 days before I received the GPS and thus I was unable to download the free update. A call to Garmin easily resolved that - the customer service contact person added it to my account for free download. The second problem was that when I tried to install the updated map I got a message indicating there was not enough space and it refused to install. Another call to Garmin and a software expert used "remote assist" (after my giving him permission to take control of my computer from his location) and made live changes to my GPS. After that the map update was successful. In both cases the Garmin personnel were most courteous, very competent, and easy to understand.

I also found the Garmin MapSource program very helpful. It can be downloaded at no charge if you already have another Garmin program, and if you don't, you can first download and install the free Garmin Training Center program and then download and install MapSource at no cost. Working in MapSource to create, to view and to edit waypoints and tracks and other features and then using MapSource to transfer the data to the GPS is far easier than trying to do this directly on the GPS.

Apart from mapping, the "Points of Interest" feature can lead you to unexpected places. After using the GPS "Where To", then "Points of Interest" in the Germantown, Maryland area I selected "Food" to look for lunch. The first two addresses ended up being residential addresses in townhouse developments. Out of curiosity I learned that one house was unoccupied according to a neighbor and at the other house no one answered the door. On my 3rd try I selected the chain "Subway" and that address was right on. Clearly the Points of Interest contains some unreliable information. However, this would likely be true for all Garmin GPS models.
Better than a Nuvi 760

Before I decided to buy this Nuvi 265wt model, I had bought the Nuvi 760 model on Black Friday. The 760 model was okay at best. I had it for about three weeks until I realized that the upper right hand corner would not respond until after pressing that corner at least five times. So I decided to return the Garmin and I was thinking about getting a tomtom or magellan. But then I saw the 265wt on sale for $200 and I decided, since I bought the 760 for $250, maybe I could save money and just give Garmin one last try...As soon as I opened the 265wt, I fell in love with it!

The 265wt FAR OUTWEIGHS the Nuvi 760 by a mile! The screen refresh rate on the 265wt is much better, the satellite locks on faster, the colors are brighter in my opinion (and yes, they were at the same brightness level!), and the free traffic is so much better on the 265wt. With the 760, I had free MSN Traffic for three months and comparing that with the 265wt traffic, they are exactly the same. Except with the 760, you have to pay a yearly subscription. Furthermore, with the 265wt, you can custom load POI's (Points of Interest) and so I have loaded mine with all the locations of In-N-Out Burger and Rudy's BBQ in America, which is awesome. They also have Custom POI's which show you where speed camera's and red light camera's are, if that's your kind of thing. But I'm a law abiding Texan, so I never mess with Texas and that kind of illegal stuff...

The only thing that the 760 had that the 265wt doesn't have is mp3/audiobook and the FM Transmitter with audio jack.
About the FM Transmitter - it was a cool feature but it wasn't practical because in Dallas, where I live, there are thousands of radio stations. There are hardly any open radio stations. You think there's an open one, but then all of a sudden, you hear the voice of a person speaking a different language (must have been Chinese Talk Radio) or you hear a Mariachi Band playing. Then you go one decimal point higher, and there's the Hip-Hop Station. With so much static in Dallas, the MP3/Audiobook Player really becomes useless...

The only time I was able to use the transmitter without static was when I took a trip up to Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, there isn't much radio stations as there are only cows and fields in Oklahoma. I finally was able to put the 760 to the true test of using the MP3 player. However, what I found really dissappointing was that as I was listening to Richard P. Feynman's Audiobook, "The Elementary Particles and the Laws of Physics: The 1986 Dirac Memorial Lectures", I fell asleep on I35 and almost got into a car crash near Oklahoma City. It was then I realized that the Nuvi 760's MP3/Audiobook player was more of a driving hazzard than a helpful tool to get me safely to Norman, OK where I needed to go.

Therefore, HANDS DOWN the 265wt is not only a better GPS than the Nuvi 760, but it's also a FAR SAFER GPS!!! If you want MP3's or Music without static, get an Ipod and connect it to your car. It's far better...

An Excellent GPS device.

Review Date: October 23, 2008
Reviewer: Dodongo Dislikes Smoke, Boston, MA
This Nuvi does several things very well, and I've yet to discover any serious shortcomings. My thoughts:

Navigation: Excellent, as is typical with Garmin units. On a couple of occasions the voice (right now I'm using Australian Karen) told me my destination was on the wrong side of the street.

Map: The map is clear, the refresh rate is fast, and all of the right information is provided on-screen, including details for upcoming turns and junctions, speed limit, and traffic alerts. It's annoying that I can't choose to switch the display of my current speed to some other piece of info. I already have a speedometer. The 3D buildings feature seems pretty gimmicky, and is implemented sporadically, even in downtown Boston. When there is coverage, most buildings are monochromatic blocks, and not the photo-realistic buildings seen in screenshots.

Lane Assist: This feature has been spot-on so far. It's nice driving in a new area and not getting flustered about being in the wrong lane. I have yet to see the full-screen 3D Lane Assist Junction View shown in the many 765t screenshots -- however, I've done very little highway driving, and I believe this screen requires that the user press the top-left (upcoming turn icon).

>>>>>UPDATE: After some highway driving, it turns out that the full-screen 3D Lane Assist Junction View shows up automatically before potentially tricky highway junctions. Very nice.

Traffic: As far as I know, I have not been re-routed because of traffic. However, it's very easy to bring up a list of major roads and their current traffic conditions, and to avoid them at will. The pop-up advertising associated with the "free" traffic is pretty subtle, and never distracting.

Bluetooth: I'm impressed with this feature so far. It mated with my phone (old Motorola RAZR V3) easily, importing all of my contacts in the process. The ability to instantly dial any point of interest (e.g., to check on store hours) is brilliant. The volume from the speaker is reasonably loud. I also tried sending the audio to my car stereo using an audio cable, and the output seemed a bit low (I had to turn my car stereo way up). I have not yet tried sending the audio to my car stereo using the FM transmitter. I called my voicemail, and the built-in microphone picks up my voice reasonably well with the engine running. I'm not sure how well it would work with highway speeds. I'm told that the cheap Garmin microphone (which plugs into the cradle, not the unit) improves voice quality.

>>>>>UPDATE: This is true -- the microphone is an improvement, though it adds yet another long cord to your long cord collection. Also, I've tried the FM transmitter. It works, albeit with a certain amount of static. I imagine this feature would intolerable if you are driving a long way.

Other features: I haven't used the SD card slot for anything. I haven't tried the photo viewer or the mp3 player, and I probably won't.

Build Quality: Seems solid. The unit has a certain heft to it, and it's covered in a soft, rubbery coating. I've also dropped it already (because I'm an idiot) -- still working beautifully.

Suggested improvements: Garmin doesn't make it easy to look up the actual coordinates (latitude and longitude) for favorites or points of interest. This information should be available at the press of a button.

Needless to say, I'm pleased with my purchase. The 756t is not cheap right now, and if you can live without the new features, you might be better off with an older unit. That said, if you're looking for a gps device with all of the latest features and compatibility, this seems to be a solid pick.
Great so far

Review Date: December 4, 2008
Reviewer: Donald Signorino, Bayville, NJ United States
I received my 765T a few days ago and love it so far. After reading some up and down reviews, I wasn't certain what to expect. I am pleasantly surprised.

To start, the unit's volume is plenty loud, even at highway speeds. The screen is readable at all times, and automatically changes to a darkened "night mode" at night - very easy on the eyes. You can force it to day or night mode, if desired.

The map's movement and fluidity is tremendous. It has a very natural looking motion at all times. Garmin claims the unit updates at 10fps, and it seems to be about that. I am still deciding if I prefer 3D or 2D mode yet, but both are great. I tested routing on a few trips and the navigation worked perfectly. Directions were given in plenty of time, and repeated at appropriate intervals. When just driving (not navigating) the green bar at the top displays your current road, and even displays the next exit when driving (not navigating) on major highways. This was unexpected for me and really cool! The voice on the unit is clear.

The overall feel of the software is great. The menus move quickly and seem logically laid out. You can add categories to your favorites to better organize them. This helped a lot, since favorites are sorted by default via distance from your current location. Creating folders for your favorites works very well. You can even add a picture (and phone #) to your favorites. Very nice!

As for Bluetooth: I paired the 765 with my Blackberry Storm easily, and everything works flawlessly. My phone's contacts transferred immediately, and I can call Points of Interest and people from my contacts easily, with 1 touch. I do not have any of the bluetooth issues described in other places. No issues at all. So I'm either lucky or maybe there is some inconsistency in the hardware. More likely, different combinations of cell phones and GPS units lead to varying results. IMPORTANT: I did update the unit to it's latest firmware, which many say have helped their bluetooth connections.

I haven't been to an area with a traffic reception signal yet, so I can't comment on the traffic function.

All the other niceties work well for me also: The picture viewer, MP3 player, etc all work as advertised. I even put 1 of my pics as the startup image.

In conclusion, I am very pleased with the product so far. This is a great product that I would highly recommend.
A satisfied purchaser . . .

I purchased the Nuvi 780 on Oct 1 because the 765t wasn't available at my local big box yet. Two weeks later (and after a firmware upgrade), my 780 developed a speech impediment: "Turn left at highway . . . . . 405, then turn l . . . eft." It sounded like she had to pause to either think about where she was, or to hold a fist in front of her mouth for a silent burp or something. That unit went back and by that time the 765t was out. A swap plus $100 later, I had the new unit. Pros over the 780: much faster screen redraws, faster sat acquisition, more POIs, slight user interface tweaks (all for the better IMO) and generally a tighter feel. Cons: ad supported traffic (doesn't bother me, but it might others) and no included MSN Direct. However, after using the service for 2 weeks, I would gladly trade it for faster screen redraws and the lane assist feature. Movie times and gas prices are nice, but until I can actually make my movie and dinner reservations over the GPS, I'll forgo it. The bluetooth functionality gives me the direct-to-POI dial feature, which is so utterly cool. I just moved to the Seattle area and would be so utterly lost without this gadget. It takes the stress out of driving, and that alone is worth the hefty price.
Nuvi 765T Observations

Review Date: December 18, 2008
Reviewer: Tony Neetz, Tinley Park, IL USA
After waiting a long time to buy a GPS and reading many, many reviews while watching the prices go up and down, I finally pulled the trigger on a Nuvi 765T on Thanksgiving morning when I saw the price drop to $349.00 on Amazon with free shipping. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price and couldn't buy it fast enough. Especially since at the time, the lowest price I had seen was around $460. Although it had the features I wanted, I had some reservations about getting the 765T because of several reviews that listed problems with the screen, speaker volume, bluetooth, missing features from the 760, etc. So after putting it though its paces for a few weeks I would like to share my observations with this unit. First off I have to say I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. In the past I had used the Nuvi 350, and several different TomTom's as well as rental car units, and this unit blows them away. The first thing I did was to up update the firmware to v.2.50 and had no problems in doing so.

Screen: The screen on the unit I received is very bright and clear. The colors look great and it is just as bright as the Nuvi 350 I had used. The sensitivity on this screen is fine and there is no problem with the calibration for buttons, etc.

Sound Quality: The sound from the speaker is very good on this unit. Could it be louder? Sure. But in normal driving with the radio at regular listening volume and /or the windows open, I have no trouble hearing it at all when set to 100%. When driving without the radio, I actually turn it down to 80% as it is too much. The navigation voice (have tried several and like Australian Karen) at 100% is clean with no distortion. From some of the reviews I had read, I was expecting to have to hold it up to my ear to hear it, but it really is fine.

Bluetooth: This was one of the things I was worried about not working, but surprisingly the Nuvi immediately paired with both my, and my wife's older Sanyo Katana phones. It also shows the phone books and the contact names for both phones. In making calls over the Nuvi, the people I have called state that the voice quality is fine and there is no echo or distortion. Although I don't use my cell phone a lot, when I do, its great not having to hold the phone and drive at the same time. Very happy with this feature.

Traffic: I was really surprised on how accurate the traffic feature on this unit has been so far, as I wasn't really expecting much. Perhaps the coverage is better in the Chicagoland area then other areas, but it has accurately shown where there were slow downs and congestion ahead on I-90/94, I-57 and I-355. The "ads" for the free traffic pop up from time to time, but I rarely notice them and they certainly are not in the way or distracting at all.

Routing: So far, with one exception, the routing has been really spot-on. The navigation has brought us to our unknown destination with no problems, and takes the routs I would normally take for the places I am familiar with. It even knew that our home street is divided by a drainage ditch and instructed me to go past our house and make the correct two left turns to get into our driveway when arriving on the opposite side of the street. This really surprised me! It did one strange thing though, when driving home from Chicago going south down the Dan Ryan expressway, I need to eventually merge west onto I-57 south, and for some reason, the Nuvi kept telling me to get on the Indiana toll road and go east, which would have taken me miles way out of my way. I should have brought up the turn list to see where it was going to take me, but I was in heavy traffic with bad weather and needed to keep my eyes on the road. Once I passed the exit for the Indiana toll road it "recalculated" and took me home perfectly. The only thing I could think of was that I had "Avoid Traffic" enabled and there was some heavy traffic on I-57 ahead which it may have been trying to avoid, but I'm not sure. I will turn off the "Avoid Traffic" feature and try it again the next time I travel that way.

Other Features: I love the Lane Assist, and the Junction View has come up many times in the Chicago area which is a big help. I have not tried the FM transmitter yet which a lot of people complain about not working well. The picture viewer is nice and I have loaded some pictures on it and taken it to friends houses and used it to show them vacation pictures. Since my car radio plays MP3's I don't have much use for the MP3 player as of yet but will try it out in the future. I loaded several POIs for various places and they work great too; giving both audio and visual prompts within set distances of the POIs.

I could go on and on, but those are the main things I wanted to share. I had read about some early complaints with this unit, especially with the pre v2.50 update, so perhaps I just go lucky with this unit, but so far I could not be happier with it!
Excellent - Upgraded from 670 to 765T

Review Date: February 6, 2009
Reviewer: Daniel G. Lebryk,
My son needed a GPS, so it was either buy him an inexpensive GPS (like the Nuvi 200 series) or give him my old unit and get myself a new one. Well the choice was made very easy with this 765T, especially falling into the sale of the century in November, 2008.

The feature set of this GPS have been reviewed all over the place. There's two things I'd like to do in this review, comment on lane guidance and compare this unit to the 670.

Lane guidance or intersection help. There's a ton of misinformation around about this feature. Almost everyone that rates this unit a 1 star or worse and complains about the guidance just doesn't understand how it works. There's two indicators for helping you determine which lane to use for your next exit.
A little tiny box in the upper left hand corner appears with vertical arrows. The number of arrows corresponds to the number of lanes. The bold arrow is the lane you should be in to make the exit. It's pretty darn simple and effective. In fact in Toronto, those arrows were a life saver and were very accurate - four arrows, right three were where I needed to be for the exit.
The second view is with the big old exit signs like you see on the picture for this GPS. This is the thing that has upset so many people. Those signs are only available in certain areas, mostly heavily travelled metropolitan areas. When they appear they work more wonderfully than you can ever imagine. They also don't appear until pretty close to the exit. I've seen them several times now in the past month. The best example was in Toronto, early in the trip the real signs were in green, and sure enough the Nuvi showed green signs. The lane view, and arrow view were spot on perfect. Further down the highway, the real signs changed to blue, and sure enough the Nuvi displayed blue signs. The wording and look is virtually identical to the signs on the road. It doesn't get easier to follow this kind of view. The sign view also appeared very briefly on the Indiana Tollway.
So any review you read about that function not working is a hooey. It absolutely works, but only in certain areas and where it is necessary.

Comparison to the previous generation Nuvi's, specifically the 6X0 series. This new model is probably 1/2 the thickness of my 670, or it feels much thinner. There is no fold out antenna, a good thing. The plastic they used on the 765T is amazing, it sort of has that almost soft rubbery / satiny finish. The unit feels very well built and solid, like it's worth the price you paid. The 670 felt a bit cheap to me, not nearly as refined or like an $800 (at the time) device. The power button is not good at all on the 765T, it's too easy to hit and turn the unit on or off. I liked the old style much better. The power clip on the back is very well constructed, the unit snaps in nice and firm. The same old friction mount (the bean bag thing) works exactly the same on this unit. Dec 12, 2009 update - this is a much better mount Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for somebody that travels on planes to a car. This one folds nice and flat.

Software-wise, Garmin still has a ways to go on user interface. Although you start with find a location and settings in big icons, it's still not totally 100% clear what you should press to do what you want. I find myself still pretty lost in the settings menus (those icons really don't sing to me at all). It's not intuitive on how to change from fastest route to use highways, etc. Aside from the lane change stuff, Garmin did make the display really nice. They made the icons much smaller and cleaned up the actual navigation display. Instead of this long bar across the bottom, you now get smaller ovals of information. They added a Speed Limit sign where that information is available (very nice touch). If there is no speed limit, the unit displays your current speed. Zoom and rotate are much easier to use and more intuitive. They dropped the ability to see the GPS satellite strength (I miss that). And the touch screen sometimes has a mind of its own, the bottom row is particularly badly aligned. Fortunately you don't have to touch the screen much. Dec 12, 2009 update - there is a secret undocumented way of seeing the satellite data, touch your finger to the satellite strength indicator and hold for about 10 or 15 seconds. Satellite data along with lat/log, speed, and altitude show up (thanks John in the comments for reminding me).

Satellite reception, I don't really see an incredible improvement over the previous Nuvi's. Technically it may be better and faster, but practically I don't really see a difference. It still can't pick up satellites and momentarily gets lost around high concentrations of tall buildings. But I think that is inhernet in these GPS systems. Garmin hasn't improved the choice of routes over older units (I still wonder why she picks certain routes). You can add more destinations to your trip now.

They did add a cute feature, 3-D building view to certain cities. Chicago has a good number of buildings, and it looks cool. They managed to incorporate the 3-D without imparing map reading.

I also really like the where am I function. There seems to be more restaurants and points of interest displayed than my old Nuvi. Traffic information is identical on both units (no surprise there, they get the information from the same source). I haven't seen a single ad yet with the traffic information, thank you Garmin.

On this unit, Europe is reduced to virtually a topo map with only MAJOR roads on it. For Paris, the Peripherique is the only road displayed inside the city, with spokes of the A level highways (A1, A4, et al). You could never ever navigate Europe with this poor base map. You can very easily add the European Garmin map set to this device, there's plenty of space in memory.

Overall, a great small, tidy package, with nice software upgrades. I'm happy I purchased this GPS. If you are happy with your 6 or 3 series Nuvi, none of these features are worth the upgrade cost. If you can justify moving your 6 or 3 to somebody else, this is the unit to purchase.

July 8, 2009 update. There is an excellent tips and tricks website that has hundreds of ways to use your Nuvi better. In your favorite search engine type in nuvi tips and tricks. The first hit will be this very ugly huge website. Start reading, you will be very glad you did.

Dec. 12, 2009 update. Something really evil started happening with my original unit, the battery life was down to 15 minutes on a full charge (Garmin support asked me to do a bunch of discharges and recharges to troubleshoot the battery). And on one trip the unit failed to ever find satellites. After an hour of searching, I finally shook the thing updside down, smacked it a few times, and it started working. An email to Garmin, a day later an RMA number appeared. Shipped the old unit back and a remanufactured unit arrived about 4 days later. This new one works so much better. I think my old one might have been defective all along. If you have to do this there are instructions for transferring your favorites and old maps to the new unit. Remember to back that stuff up.
On software - if you plan on doing the map update even once, purchase nuMpas Lifetime North America - Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates. The lifetime subscription is just about the same price as a single update. And Amazon is absolutely the place to buy this subscription, it's way cheaper than direct from Garmin.

Wonderful Value / Very functional

Review Date: June 2, 2008
Reviewer: JeffrySG, New York, NY United States
I haven't used many GPS systems before so this is more of a review of this individual system as it stands on its own and not comparing it to other systems. Living in a large city, I don't own a car, but recently I needed to make a trip that entailed visiting 7 or 8 locations all within a few hours of each other (in a rental car). I knew that I might have to change the order of when I would get to each location or possibly not go to them all. Not being very familiar with the area I figured that it might be a good idea to get a GPS. This unit worked perfectly for the whole trip. I programed in each address before leaving and saved it as a favorite location which made picking a new destination really easy while driving. All of the directions accurate, and the computer voice was easy to understand (and you have a choice of a few voices as well). I'm not sure how many 'favorite' locations you can put in but I had in over 10 so you can enter at least that many.

Here's a list of other features that I liked:
- It came with a lighter/power cord for the car.
- Came with a USB cable to charge on the computer.
- You can update maps on the computer and backup your maps/info.
- It actually came with Macintosh software!! (as well as Windows of course)
- It came with a very useful suction cup holder to attach to the front windshield (it worked very well and never came off)
- This is a refurbished unit but it looked brand new. I didn't even see a small scratch on the unit.
- I liked the night mode that had darker colors.
- There is an option to have the volume adjust based on your car speed.
- It is small enough to put into a pocket or bag when you leave the car.
- I didn't use them but it has a bicycle mode and a walking mode.
- You can buy updates to maps or other map locations online.

Some features that you may not like:
- It doesn't say the name of the street you need to turn onto. (I didn't really mind that, though)
- The screen is pretty small. I actually liked it this way though, as I didn't want it to take up too much of my view out the front window. But if you have trouble reading small text it might be hard to see what the exit is, etc. Some elements, like your speed or arrival time are pretty small.
- When you first turn it on it can take 4 or 5 minutes to locate the GPS satellites. (not sure how this compares to other units)
- It would probably be hard to enter a new address while you're driving as the screen is pretty small. That's why I pre-entered them before hand.
- You have to go through a few menus to change the volume. Not too bad if your parked but if you're driving it can be a little tricky. (Don't crash)

I think that's about it. Again, I'm not sure how this compared to other portable units or other built in units but for what I wanted this was perfect, especially for the price and as of this writing there is a rebate as well.
It's a Keeper!

I purchased this refurbished TomTom specifically for a trip from Arizona to Colorado. My intention was to sell it after I returned home.

The TomTom looked like a complete package when it arrived, including flyers with a code to download the most recent map. However, when I tried to install the map I was advised the coupon was no longer valid.

I called TomTom with some trepidation as some others had mentioned Customer Service was not that great. My experience was good. It took two phone calls. In the first, I was asked to fax or email in my receipt. Then, after waiting a few minutes, I called back and was advised the latest was ready to download. Installation went smoothly but I did make sure I did a backup before downloading the new map. Then, after it was installed, I did a backup. (I'm a customer service rep so I KNOW the benefit of backups!)

I downloaded some voices and extra points of interest from the TomTom site. I also did an Internet search and found some sites that had additional downloads, some free, some pay. (Some of the pay items were available from free sites so check carefully!) I found the KitKar sound as well as Yoda and enjoy both.

My initial test was in my home city. I had to go to our local convention center four days in a row so added it as a favorite. I deliberately tried to confuse the system and was sometimes successful. For the most part, the TomTom was great. I even found some different, faster routes then my usual.

My trip route took me on what was supposedly the fastest but not what I wanted on one segment. I chose to add stops along the way as favorites, including a town that would force my shortcut.

It was great! I ran into some heavy rain through some cities where there were lots of curves and construction. If I had not had TomTom I definitely wouldn't have been in the right lanes at times. Especially in the rain where I could barely see 100 yards ahead it was wonderful to see if the road curved.

When I reached my destination, it provided lots of fun for my three-year-old grandson. As I traveled in my family's car, he delighted in hearing Yoda's voice and the various point of interest sounds I'd selected. I was able to easily add some destinations in their city. I told my grandson, "it's impossible to get lost with TomTom."

Suffice to say, I'm not about to sell it, even though a neighbor asked if she could buy it!

I brought a Bracketon Nav-Mat and strongly recommend it. I placed the TomTom to my left, on my dash mat. Although not recommended, I could reach out and change the screen when driving.

The only negative is that in strong sun it can be hard to read the screen as it is washed out. The voice commands help to counter that. Lots of advance warning of turns.

I recommend reading the other reviews on the TomTom (non-refurbished) for more information. For me, this was a great purchase. While I don't use it every day, I keep it in a pocket in my purse, always ready to use when it's needed.

FOLLOW UP - OCTOBER 12, 2008
The day after I posted this review I turned on my TomTom and had an orange X. It didn't work. I went to the site, checked the resource on the problem, and did everything requested. Still the X. Emailed support saying I had done everything and wanted to know my next step. The reply didn't indicate a human had actually read what I wrote ... it simply referred me to the article I'd already followed.

I went through the steps again (a fairly lengthly process and not for anyone not familiar with computers, formatting external disks, etc. Still the X even though everything appeared to be loaded correctly. I finally found the time to call. The support person was very professional and quickly agreed that I'd done everything they would recommend. She issued a RMA and transferred me to the RMA department.

I had to pay to have the TomTom sent back ($10 for UPS ... postal service not recommended). A bit over a week later I received a new TomTom (different serial number). It's worked well so far.

I still recommend this!

First of all: Buying Refurbished rules. You get a like-new product that has already been tested so there is no new-product-surprises; You can be sure it is working perfectly. AND is cheaper.
The Amazon shipping was superb. I purchased it on July 22nd. Was estimated for August 4th - 8th; Arrived July 25th.

TOMTOTM ONE 3RD edition HIGHLIGHTS:

-Everything you need is on the box.
-WILL GIVE YOU YOUR COORDINATES VERY easily and you can even configure the units.
-HAS WALKING MODE (I love to walk, and the GPS will take in account that I don't need to follow car's restrictions.)
-Will charge from the USB port. (Very important if you walk)
-MULTI LANGUAGE
-TOMTOM HOME is a very good computer application that lets you update backup and even operate the GPS from the PC. You can even browse the contents of the GPS memory.

Coordinates people, COORDINATES!
Most people don't care about this. But they usually wont dislike having the information available just in case. Some GPS units won't give you your coordinates, and if you are a Map fan like me, or you live in a country where the maps are not good or not even available, you would probably REALLY appreciate to just know your coordinates, is really all you need!

Even more: If you are a Private pilot, or undergoing training to obtain your license, you off course know that an airplane GPS is REALLY expensive.
Since this beauty will give you your coordinates, you can use it to check where are you flying if you get lost, and all you need is your Sectional.

Coming back to all the people that does not walk or fly (or do biking, because this baby has a bicycle mode also):

It does EVERYTHING you need in a Automobile's GPS: As most GPS units has points of interest, let you store favorite locations, has configurable color schemes (including night colors), you can switch the display between 3D and 2D.
As not all GPS units, it will let you CORRECT something in the map that could be mistaken. The TOMTOM HOME, and web site support the "MapShare" system that will update your maps according to corrections other people had been doing. Is a community sharing thing so is free :)

You can select among many voices (you can download and there are plenty that are downloadable at no cost) and there are voices in many languages. And likewise you can download icons sounds and a lot of updates.
You can even upload text files to your Tomtom... In case you want to read something... Is like a PDA.

I said the box has everything you need. Well maybe something is missing: The TOMTOM home application is not in the box, because there is no CD in the package. But you can download it from the website (as well as the complete manual).

The unit itself could be plugged to a traffic wireless system (that can be your cellphone if you have the service). Has the on/off button, a reset button and the USB cable connection.

No memory flash slot for this one so no memory expansion.
Total memory is about 1GB and is pretty much full. Around 100 MB are free, which is more than enough for voices, maps updates an other stuff.

If you need to have more than one major map file. You can store them in your PC and upload the one you need to your Tomtom ONE without loosing anything.

This is a very good product; although I cannot speak about durability for myself (I just received it today). Right now I cannot think of something else that I would like it to do, and for the price I don't really want it to do anything more.
Excellent product at a very reasonalble price

We do a lot of driving on family vacations and weekend trips in general. We purchased this to avoid some the hassles of getting lost in new areas. I've used it on one long distance and several short distance trips. It has been a great help. I certainly can get myself from one city to the next without a problem, but the Tom Tom system was a major help driving to various tourist attractions in a new city. The only problem I found so far, was on a trip to Chicago (which I know very well). It tried to direct us onto an expressway that runs through downtown when it was much less trouble and shorter distance to stay on the expressway that skirts the outside of the city. It does offer a couple different ways to plan routes so perhaps the route I drove was an option had I played with the Tom Tom more.
Good product; Great value

This is my first GPS and I found it very easy to use. The software that came with it to download the latest maps didn't work but I knew from the reviews that if I called during the first month that I could download the current maps for free. I thought it was broken at first because it doesn't get a signal inside my house but it works fine in the car. It can take a few minute to get a signal when you first turn it on.

I use it with daytime colors and I put it on the windshield in the line of sight. I particularly like the facts that it continually predicts when you are going to arrive at your destination and if you find your route blocked by a closed exit or you miss a turn, it quickly recalculates your route. My wife likes the fact that you can set it to alert you when you are going over the speed limit.

I had mixed results with sticking the suction cup mount to my window (which is admittedly not the cleanest). Sometimes it would fall off after an hour and sometimes it would stay on for a couple of days. I bought a new mount on ebay that has a lever to provide extra suction and that works well.
